Report Flying Fifteen Queensland States 21 and 22 November 2015
Huey was kind over the weekend delivering 10 to 15 knots of northeasterly for both days of the regatta for the 14 boats that participated from the Tin Can Bay and Sandgate fleets. The spectator boat, Bay Wide courtesy of Coastwide Charters provided a large stable platform to view the racing including the many groundings on day 1 whilst boats pushed the boundaries trying to stay out of the flooding tide during the windward legs.
The regatta was dominated by Ashley Smith and Adam Kingston on Sake with five straight wins. The minor placings were taken by Russell Shannon and James Croton on FAB and Ken and Lee Bubb in Bubbles. The Silver division was won by Peter Shaw and Julian WInkel on Flying Fish with Gary Bradshaw and Jean Paul Mira taking out the Classic in Seamist. The Handicap trophy was won by Lindsay Gilbert and Chris Kohler in Think Big and the Most Improved by Roy Yeeles and Mark Musara in Final Fling.
The Navigator’s trophy was keenly contested but eventually won by Sake with a grounding in race 2 (pictured) with the crew scampering across the shallows in search of deeper water after disturbing our local croc Walter from his afternoon sleep. Whilst re-boarding Sake, the crew called starboard on a port tacker which sealed the win in this category.
A big thanks go to the many volunteers who gave up their time to assist with the smooth running of this regatta including Coastwide Charters, TCB Marina and TCB Houseboats for their generous support with Bay Wide and berthing the club’s support boats.
